In my last post I shared with you that I am going room by room organizing and purging my home.
Yes, I have seen the Marie Kondo show on Netflix and am as obsessed with it as others are. In fact I was watching her show and thinking of the plan for my own home when I literally jumped up and created a process that took her ideas on how to organize and added my own twists.
The process I created took me room by room asking questions and making note of the answers. It also includes expressing gratefulness for how the room has supported me and or the family, acknowledging anything that occurred or I have felt in the room I wanted to let go of and permission to reset the energy as well as setting an intention for the room.
Part of the process is asking myself how I wanted to feel in each room, how I wanted the room to function and with all of that information setting the intention for the room.
This week I am going to share 5 places in my home that I have initiated this process. My home office, my bedroom, the boys bedroom, the boys playroom and the upstairs HUB hall closet. I also will share with you how I went through the first steps of gratitude, letting go of past things, asking myself the feeling and function questions and finally setting an intention for each room.
Here’s my progress so far…
My Home Office
My home office has been for years the place that anything that didn’t have a designated place went. It built and built and built until it was unmanageable with clutter. I had moved the room my office was in over a year ago. Needless to say I didn’t truly unpack and put away the major items and it just kept growing. Here are a couple before pics.
Here is the post I have on the door of how I want to feel in the office, how I want it to function and the intention I set for the room
Here are the current AFTER pics of the office and closet space. You can see how the intention is really helping to decide what stays and goes in the room. REMEMBER NOTHING absolutely nothing that doesn’t align with the feelings, the function and finally the intention can stay in the room.
The Boys Playroom
This room was FULL as you can see of buckets, boxes and bags full of toys, legos and of course everything was all mixed together
So much work yet so worth it to create a room for the boys that feels and functions exactly how we want it to . Here is what we worked on together to create as our feelings, function and intentions
Here is where it’s at today. Already the boys know which place is theirs and the fighting of “this is mine, no its not” has lessened. I can’t wait to see the creations that come out of here.
The Hub – The Hall Closet
This closet is my linen closet, my extra kitchen storage, all the holiday table linens, my tools upstairs and more. What chaos it was each time I opened this door. I think you will see why.
This is what I wanted to feel and how I wanted it to function. So I set this intention
This is what came out of this closet. OH MY GOODNESS
By using the Feeling, Function Intention Blueprint this is how it looks today.
My Bedroom
This room was quite enlightening to me. One thing I didn’t know is I was hanging everything up inside out and backwards on the hanger. I really had no idea. I spent two whole hours just rehanging things. After I heaped it all onto the bed that is.
Here is what I created for my Feelings, Function, Intention Blue print. Full disclosure we are done with the closet and the dresser and that is all right now yet it has TOTALLY changed how I feel about getting up and getting dressed.
I just love the colors in my closet. It makes me smile and feel so happy when I look at it all. I can find what I want when I want it. I am wearing things I haven’t seen in years.
These are all clothes I gave away in a Buy Nothing FB Group. I love love paying it forward through this process.
The Boys Bedroom
I have two full time boys at the house and a third that comes part time. They all share a bedroom. I bought a double sized bed bunk bed with a trundle. Each has their own bed, their own dresser and place for things. Given they are all brothers but were not raised together, up until now, creating what they call the “JCC Brotherhood was crucial”. We started the entire house project in this room. We didn’t get a ton of BEFORE pics. I will show you what I have and I think you will agree the after is quite amazing and totally serves the Feeling Function Intention Blueprint we created.
I am committed to using what I have and trying to keep the entire house budget for anything for the WHOLE house to 500.00 MAX Currently I am well under 100.00. These dressers were my uncles file cabinets from his work. We took them apart, sanded them and stained them to make them shine again. Re purposing is so great.
Here is the Feeling Function Intention Blueprint for the room.
Here is how the room is today. The boys are learning how to fold the Konmari method. We P-Touched their drawers so they know where things go and we also p touched the stair drawers on the bed so they know where their sheets are when we change the sheets once a week.
So that is where we are at right now. In full transparency I will say I feel like the boys room is the only actually totally complete and finished. I realize that we have to go through the entire house and touch everything to truly get everything in its proper place and serving its true current function. So much is being given away or will sell at a garage sale. The boys love it and I didn’t realize how much they needed this also. We are taking this opportunity to create new roles, with new chores and helpful acts for the family.
I will tell you I have cried, laughed, sat with shock, and at times have wept. Why? Because I truly went through each room and allowed the Gratitude to be there AND also the acknowledgment of the pain and chaos that had occurred in the past. The willingness to let it go. Allow it to be gone. All the pain and trauma and anything that was unsettling. I allowed myself permission to move forward.
Truly I can see that anything or anyone that doesn’t align with the intentions of the rooms or our home can be here or in our lives.
I will keep working with my organizer fairy for the next few months and I will come back and show you the entire finished product. We intend to complete not only the inside including the garage but also the 4. 5 outbuilding (sheds, playhouse etc) We are doing property line to property line.
I am keeping a journal of my feelings and the journey. This way I am allowing the rush of memories and emotions to come up and out. I think we stuff SO much that we just don’t get how important it is to release. When we do we can make room for space in our hearts, our mind and in our lives.
